Frequently asked questions

What is a Yali?

Yali (also spelled Vyala or Vidala) is a mythical composite beast from Hindu and Dravidian temple art - typically formed with the body of a lion, the trunk of an elephant, and the tail of a serpent. For centuries, Yali sculptures have graced temple pillars, doorways, and ceremonial objects across South India. Owning a Yali is believed to ward off negative energy while inviting strength and courage into your home.

How many types of Yali exist in temple art?

Traditional Shilpa Shastra and temple art recognise several major forms, typically grouped into 5 to 16 types depending on regional tradition. The most commonly referenced are: Simha Yali (lion), Gaja Yali (elephant), Ashwa Yali (horse), Makara Yali (crocodile/sea-creature), Sarpa Yali (serpent), Hamsa Yali (swan), Goat Yali, and Dog Yali. During the Vijayanagara and Nayak periods, artists also created highly imaginative mixed forms combining lion bodies, elephant trunks, horse faces, bird wings, serpent tails, tusks, and claws - making possible variations virtually limitless.

Which is the most famous type of Yali?

The Simha Yali (lion Yali) is the most iconic and widely used - especially across Tamil Nadu temple pillars. It features prominently at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, Brihadeeswarar Temple, and Ramanathaswamy Temple. These guardian figures - carved on pillars, mandapams, entrances, and thrones - symbolise protection, power, courage, and dominance over evil forces.

What types of Yali sculptures does Chithira Maadam offer?

Currently, we offer two types - the Simha Yali (lion) and the Gaja Yali (elephant). Other Yali types are actively in research and development and will be introduced in the future.

Our collection spans a full range - from compact tabletop figurines to commanding life-size sculptures. Each piece is crafted using a combination of CNC precision (70%) and hand-finishing by our skilled artisans (30%), ensuring both structural accuracy and authentic handcrafted character. We offer Yali sculptures in three forms: standalone sculptures for pedestals and consoles, pillar carvings for interior architecture, and door frame ornaments for entrances and prayer rooms.

Are the sculptures fully hand-carved?

Our sculptures are crafted using a hybrid method - 70% CNC machining for structural shaping and consistency, followed by 30% hand-carving by skilled artisans for detailing, finishing, and surface texture. This approach combines the precision of modern woodworking technology with the warmth and character of traditional craftsmanship, resulting in pieces that are both consistent in quality and rich in handmade detail.

How are Yali sculptures used in home décor?

  • Entrance guardians - placed on either side of a main door or gate

  • Living room accents - as statement art pieces on pedestals or consoles

  • Temple entrance décor - flanking the entrance to a home prayer room

  • Corporate spaces - as a symbol of strength and heritage in office lobbies

  • Garden displays - as outdoor sculptural art in covered areas

Are Yali sculptures available in different finishes?

Yes. We offer four finishes - natural teakwood tone, antique-stained, polished, and Rosewood finish (crafted using Black Murdah wood for its rich, dark grain that closely resembles traditional rosewood). Custom finish requests are also welcome and can be specified at the time of order.

Can I order a life-size Yali sculpture?

Yes. Chithira Maadam crafts life-size and large-format Yali sculptures on special order. These are made to specification and require additional lead time. Please contact us at +91 63815 44855 or orders@chithiramaadam.com for pricing and timelines.

Are Yali sculptures suitable as gifts?
