Chettinad doors
What is a Chettinad door?
A traditional wooden door from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu, machine-sculpted, hand-finished and built in teak. These doors were made for the mansions of the Nattukotai Chettiar merchant community.
What kinds do you make?
Single doors for interiors, double doors for main entrances, temple doors, and fully custom doors made to your drawing.
Can I customise the size and design?
Yes. Dimensions, carving pattern, frame design and finish are all open. Send your specification and any reference images to orders@chithiramaadam.com.
How long does a custom door take?
Typically 3 to 8 weeks from order confirmation, depending on size and how detailed the carving is.
Will it suit a modern home?
Yes. These doors sit well in contemporary interiors, farmhouses, resorts and offices, not only heritage buildings.
Care and materials
What wood do you use?
Mostly premium Burma Teak, for its strength, natural oils and resistance to moisture, termites and warping. We also work in Silver Greywood, Arjuna, Wild Jack and Laran.
How do I look after a teak door?
Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Apply teak or linseed oil every 6 to 12 months. Keep water exposure low and use a soft brush on carved areas.
Why does my piece look slightly different from the photo?
Because each piece is machine-sculpted and then hand-finished. Pose, motif, colour and grain shift from piece to piece. Natural variation is not a defect.
